The wife of an Everton player arrested on suspicion of alleged child sex offences has left their marital home, according to reports.

The Daily Mail report the partner has returned to her hometown, while the accused footballer is currently staying in a ‘safe house’.

The accommodation has reportedly been arranged by Everton, who are supporting the player.

His wife is said to be being comforted by members of her family, and the Mail claim she was spotted outside their home on Monday evening.

Later that night, Everton confirmed one of their players had been suspended pending a police investigation.

However, the footballer cannot be named for legal reasons.

“Everton can confirm it has suspended a First-Team player pending a police investigation,” the club statement read.

“The Club will continue to support the authorities with their inquiries and will not be making any further statement at this time.”

Greater Manchester Police have not added to their earlier statement which said: “Officers arrested a man on Friday, July 16 2021 on suspicion of child sex offences.

“He is on police bail pending further enquiries.”
