Harvey Barnes may be out for several months owing to a foot injury, but Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe believes the £38 million winger will still play a key part this season.

Barnes was making only his second appearance for the club after joining for £38 million from Leicester City in July.

“He was down after the game,” Howe said to reporters. “I think he knew it wasn’t your normal injury where you feel a muscle and you think, ‘That might be one or two weeks.'”This was a somewhat more complicated situation, and I believe he feared the worst because he was alone. It was one of those systems where he probably thought it wasn’t quite right, so no doubt he would be frustrated because he was eager to demonstrate his worth and value, and Sunday was a fantastic opportunity.

“However serious his injury is, and however long it takes him to recover, we will be there for him.” We know he’s a top-tier player, and he still has a significant role to play.”
