Toronto Raptors Issue Apology After Posting Controversial Women’s Day Video
The Toronto Raptors issued an apology after their video dedicated to Women’s History Month sparked severe backlash for being insincere. The video featured Raptors players Malachi Flynn and Precious Achiuwa along with Scottie Barnes and three players had a crisp one-sentence answer that many claimed was lackadaisical.
Per The Toronto Sun, the franchise released a statement saying: “We’re an organization that prides itself on doing the right thing when it comes to inclusion and representation, and we made a mistake. Our sincerest apologies to our players, our staff, and our fans — we’ll work to do better today and every day after.”
The clip opened with Flynn remarking that women are the only ones who can procreate, while Achiuwa added that they run the world as they birth everybody.” Barnes kept it simple saying, “all women are great because they are queens.”
Except that the video garnered immense flak. In related news, Toronto will host Women’s Empowerment Night on March 14 at Scotiabank Arena when they take on the Denver Nuggets.
How Have The Toronto Raptors Fared This Season?
At the time of writing, the Raptors come off a 119-108 loss to the Washington Wizards. It marks their second loss in five games, putting them at 31-33 and ninth in the East.
Toronto has struggled with inconsistency throughout the season, but their record gives them a good shot at staying in the playoff race. Their key players Pascal Siakam, Fred VanVleet, and OG Anunoby have been doing the bulk of the scoring for the side.
Siakam has been the player to watch out for, averaging 25.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 6.1 assists this season.
During the All-Star weekend, the forward made his objective clear. Per Doug Smith of the Toronto Star, he said: “Obviously, the player that I am, it goes with the team’s success. I want to win, that’s the only thing I’m really focused on.”
Minus the furor the Raptors have created with the video, they will still look to focus on the task at hand and hope to move away from the issue as quickly as they can. It remains to be seen if they can indeed make the postseason from here.
