Wolves caused a huge upset yesterday by beating Manchester City 2-1 at Molineux.
After losing 3-2 to Ipswich Town in the Carabao Cup, many Wolves fans did not expect anything at all yesterday at Molineux.
But Gary O’Neil changed to a back three and deployed wing-backs, and set up to counter City.
And the plan worked a treat.
City had the lion’s share of possession as expected.
But Wolves were able to create a few meaningful opportunities.
The sensational Pedro Neto created the first goal, carrying the ball a significant distance and tearing away from Phil Foden and Nathan Ake before forcing an own goal from Ruben Dias.
City got back on level terms through Julian Alvarez.
But Hwang Hee-chan popped up in the second-half to score a winner.
Many eyes yesterday were on Matheus Nunes, who was making his return to Molineux after going on strike at the club to force a move to City at the end of the transfer window.
It was a rather miserable day for him, as he struggled against the harsh reception he got from the home fans.
He was booed at every opportunity, and at half-time Pep Guardiola hooked him and put 18-year-old Oscar Bobb on.
Despite it being a tough afternoon for Nunes, he did actually display a moment of class after the final whistle…
It’s clear that Nunes is still regarded fairly highly by the Wolves players.
He is very much public enemy number one with a lot of supporters still.
His behaviour to get his move to City is something that really got people’s backs up.
After the game yesterday, journalist Steve Madeley reported that Nunes was ‘out after all his team-mates hugging and congratulating his former colleagues’ on the victory.
Fair play to him for that.
It is just a real shame Nunes acted how he did. He may not have got the reception he did yesterday had he just continued to train at Wolves.
Few would have begrudged him a move, as many didn’t expect him to stay at Molineux for long anyway. But he can now probably bank on a rough reception every time he faces Wolves in the future.
