Danny Murphy has admitted that he is surprised to hear Tottenham Hotspur are willing to offload Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg this summer.

Hojbjerg has been a mainstay in Tottenham’s midfield since arriving at the club from Southampton back in 2020 but there have been suggestions this week that the midfielder’s days at the club could be number.

The Sun claimed on Tuesday that there could be a ‘stylistic clash’ between Hojbjerg and Ange Postecoglou, with the Dane perceived as being more at home in a counter-attacking system such as the ones employed by Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho.

The report stated that with the midfielder having just two years left on his contract, his future is ‘in the balance’ this summer.

On Wednesday, 90 min went a step further and suggested that Hojbjerg will be ‘allowed to leave’ by Tottenham this summer as the club look to reshape their squad ahead of Postecoglou’s first season in charge.

Danny Murphy surprised by Hojbjerg exit claims

Murphy is puzzled to hear that the 27-year-old is facing the axe, insisting that he is a valuable player for Spurs to have in their squad.

When asked about the speculation, the former Tottenham midfielder told talkSPORT on 14 June, 11 am: “Surprised a bit, with Hojbjerg. I think he’s terrifically tenacious.

“You need one in the middle who does what he does. Honest as the day is long. Tidy on the ball. Always there, durable, doesn’t miss many games, helps the defenders. I am surprised at that one.”

Spurs Web Opinion

While I am not Hojbjerg’s biggest fan and believe that he can be upgraded on, I do not think it is out of the question that the Dane could adapt to Postecoglou’s style of play.

Hojbjerg is tactically versatile and got his footballing education from Guardiola during his early years.

However, if Postecoglou has decided that the 27-year-old is not a good fit, then the club should not hesitate to cash in on him.
