Journalist moots Leeds United return for Kalvin Phillips as Man City exit news emerges

The ideal move for Kalvin Phillips would be back to Leeds United after he has been linked with an exit from Manchester City, according to Luke Edwards.

Speaking on the BBC’s Football Gossip Daily podcast on Wednesday (11 October), the Telegraph journalist said the England midfielder left the Whites on “really good terms”, but noted that playing in the Championship could impact his international credentials.

He added that he isn’t sure if the 27-year-old would be interested in a move to Everton, with the Toffees and Newcastle United reportedly amongst the clubs interested in signing him as he looks set to leave the Etihad Stadium in January [iNews].

“Everton definitely would be [interested],” said Edwards. “Would he want to go to Everton? I think if he had his ideal move, he’d probably go back to Leeds.

“I mean he’s a massive Leeds United supporter, he left on really good terms when he left Elland Road. I think he’s still in touch with people there, but Leeds are obviously in the Championship.

“Even Gareth Southgate might baulk at picking a player who’s starting in the Championship every week over a player who’s starting every week in the Premier League.”

Not happening

This is a transfer that surely wouldn’t happen while Leeds are playing in the Championship because Phillips is much better than that level.

While he would probably like to return to Elland Road one day, now is not the time while he is firmly in Southgate’s plans in the England setup and the European Championships are just around the corner.

Although he isn’t playing regularly for Manchester City, the fact that he still plays for the Premier League champions will hold some weight with regards to his selection.

Perhaps a January loan switch to another Premier League club to secure some regular football would be the best move for him at this moment in time.

Then if the Whites do achieve their goal and are promoted back up to the top flight at the end of this season, then a move back to West Yorkshire could be on the cards next summer.

In other Leeds United news, a BBC pundit was awestruck by what one “outstanding” player did against Bristol City.
