Report: 26-year-old left-back now set to leave for free, Leeds and West Ham have shown interest
The Athletic claim that Kai Wagner is set to leave Philadelphia Union at the end of the current MLS season with contract talks going ‘nowhere’ despite Union’s desires – amid interest from Leeds United.
Wagner, 26, has starred in the nearly years he has spent in the MLS. In that time, he has played 168 times for the Union, having a hand in 38 goals from the left. He is seen as the league’s best left-back.
But with his contract expiring at the end of the current MLS campaign, Wagner is set to leave on a free. The Athletic state that Leeds have shown interest in Wagner, and are yet to sign a new left-back.
Sam Byram has been impressing in that role despite being on his weaker side, while Stuart Dallas and Junior Firpo remain at the club – though on the sidelines with injury. Interest in Wagner may remain.
Wagner to leave Philadelphia amid Leeds interest and AEK offer
The report also states that Wagner is the subject of an offer from Greek giants AEK Athens. With talks over a new deal getting nowhere close to an extension, Wagner is about to play his last Union game.
A trip to New England on Saturday evening. If he does end up going on a free transfer, Leeds have surely got to take a look at a possible deal for the German defender – who has had a hand in 13 goals this term.
If Leeds do still have an interest in Wagner, then the Whites need to move quickly given AEK are keen. Gianluca Di Marzio recently said he also has interest from West Ham, Brentford and European clubs.
