Talk about a comeback for the ages. The Washington Commanders (2-0) produced a sensational revival to defeat the Denver Broncos (0-2) 35-33 at Mile High on Sunday.

After being down 21-3 during the second quarter, Ron Rivera’s team went to work and slowly reeled in Sean Payton’s team. Such was the turnaround; the Commanders would then lead 35-24 late in the fourth quarter before Russell Wilson’s Hail Mary made things tight. Washington defended the two-point conversion to start an NFL season 2-0 for the first time since 2011.

Quarterback Sam Howell praised the team’s resiliency after the epic comeback.

“That’s who this team is,” Howell said. “Obviously, we went down early, we put ourselves in a hole early on in the game, but this is a resilient team. The thing I’m proud of is we had each other’s back on both sides of the ball. That’s what good teams have to do to find a way to win.”

It now marks Howell’s third consecutive win as an NFL starter, but in an odd twist, it also was the quarterback’s second consecutive fourth-quarter comeback.

But for all the praise Howell has received for his efforts over the last two weeks, he doesn’t want to be in a position to have to produce a comeback consistently.

“[It was] Good, but at the same time, not like to be on those positions every week,” Howell said. “We felt like we could move the ball on these guys, but it was just a matter of us playing clean football. Limiting the sacks in the first half was a big thing.”

An NFL game rarely goes how a team wants it all the time, and in their opening two games, Washington has been made to work hard to secure the win. But the main objective has been completed both times.

Up next for the 2-0 Commanders is a daunting home game against Josh Allen and the revitalized Buffalo Bills.
