‘The right decision’: 20-year-old now shares the real reason why he left Wolves this summer

Christian Marques has opened up on his decision to leave Wolves last month.

The young defender departed the club on a permanent basis to join Swiss side Yverdon Sport, which came as a surprise to some.

Once upon a time, Marques was seen as one of the hottest prospects at Molineux.

After joining the club in January 2019, Marques impressed in the Wolves academy playing in ‘the Conor Coady role’.

In the end though, Marques never ended up making a first-team appearance for Wolves.

He had a couple of loan spells away at Belenenses and then Forest Green Rovers.

He didn’t play a single minute at the former, and then injury ruined his spell with the League One side.

Marques is now with a new club, and has reflected on his exit from Wolves…

Marques has been speaking to the Express & Star about his decision to leave the club.

Despite it not working out for him, Marques doesn’t hold any bad feelings towards Wolves.

He said: “I can’t complain about anything. I joined the club at 16 and was supposed to be with the under-18s, but quickly everything changed and at 16 I was playing with the under-23s as captain and sometimes training with the first team too.

“It was something I wasn’t used to. I came from Switzerland and I was training with the under-15s and under-16s at the time, then I went over and had to get used to speaking English.

“I think I’ve made the right decision. I can’t say I planned it, but in my head I knew what I wanted to do this year and in the next few years of my career. Last season I saw a lot of players here go to Germany and France, so that’s one of my main goals.

“I’m trying to play as much as I can here for one, two or three years and then make the next step again.”

Marques admits his spell in Portugal did not go well, and says that the serious hamstring injury he picked up at Forest Green Rovers was something that really frustrated him.

Marques exit was a shame to see

Marques leaving Wolves was a bit of shame considering how highly he was rated a couple of years ago.

The feeling was that he would break through to the first-team and become a regular in the defence.

He had been playing in that Coady role at youth level and excelling.

But Marques fell off, with his loan move to Belenenses the start of his struggles.

And then the injury he picked up at Forest Green Rovers was very untimely.

Hopefully Marques is now able to kickstart his career and we will be seeing him playing at a higher standard in a few years.
