The second-ranked Buckeyes improved to 11-0 overall and 8-0 in Big Ten play heading into next Saturday’s match-up at No. 3 Michigan (11-0, 8-0). The winner will advance to the Big Ten championship game against Iowa on Dec. 2 in Indianapolis.
Against Minnesota, the Buckeyes led 13-0 at halftime before striking for two touchdowns in the first 67 seconds of the second half. Running back TreVeyon Henderson woke up the sleeping crowd with a 75-yard touchdown run on the first offensive play of the half.
Then, on Minnesota’s first play of the half, OSU’s Jack Sawyer forced a fumble, which teammate J.T. Tuimoloau recovered. That set up Kyle McCord’s 4-yard touchdown pass to Marvin Harrison Jr., which made it 27-0 with 13:53 left in the third quarter.
McCord ended up passing for 212 yards with two touchdowns for the Buckeyes.
Henderson had his third 100-yard game in his last four games, as he had 15 carries for 146 yards and two touchdowns.
This was the biggest game for Emeka Egbuka since his return from injury two weeks ago. He had five catches for 83 yards. Harrison had one touchdown grab but ended up with just three catches for 30 yards.
The Ohio State defense slammed the door on injury-depleted Minnesota (5-6, 3-5), which will need a win over Wisconsin next Saturday to become bowl-eligible. The Buckeyes held the Gophers to just 159 yards of total offense and forced two turnovers.
Minnesota quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis ended up passing for 89 yards with an interception. The Gophers netted 70 yards rushing on 29 attempts.
OSU’s Sawyer had six tackles, 3-1/2 tackles-for-loss, a sack and a forced fumble to lead the defense. Jordan Hancock added an interception as well.
