Aaron Rodgers Returns to Practice With New York Jets 11 Weeks After Achilles Surgery

Aaron Rodgers is getting closer to making a big comeback. On Wednesday, the New York Jets quarterback returned to practice 11 weeks after having surgery on his Achilles tendon. Rodgers practiced at a limited capacity and the Jets have 21 days to decide whether to activate Rodgers from injured reserve. That means Rodgers could return on December 24 when the Packers take on the Washington Commanders.

“This isn’t so much getting ready to play as much as it is a progression in his rehab,” Jets head coach Robert Saleh said, per the team’s official website. “For Aaron, what he’ll be doing in practice is no different than what he’d be doing on [a side field] with regard to certain drills and individuals. Instead of throwing with staff members, he’ll be throwing with teammates. There’s no added risk to it. There are certain things that he’s been cleared for that we’ll allow him to do.”

On September 11, during the Jets’ season-opening game against the Buffalo Bills, Rodgers tore his Achilles tendon. After surgery on September 14, he has been gradually recovering. “This entire time I’ve said what I’d like to do rehab-wise,” Rodgers stated. “My physician, Neal ElAttrache, performed a more recent and inventive surgery. I questioned him about whether we could go above and beyond the accepted procedures. All I’ve wanted to do is work more efficiently and quickly. All I have to do is be smart about the rehab, pushing myself as hard as I can and letting up when things don’t feel right.”

In March, Rodgers was traded by the Green Bay Packers to the Jets.

“In my opinion, he has already made a great deal of sacrifices for the group, himself, and his teammates, and he is continuing on that path. Regarding Rodgers, Saleh stated, “I think it is a testament to who he is as a human,” according to ESPN. Of course, part of him also wants to show that he can complete the task faster than anyone else has ever been able to. That’s just the way his mind works. I believe that he still carries a grudge.”
