The Steelers Have Reportedly Made a Decision About Mike Tomlin

The Pittsburgh Steelers could have a big decision to make this offseason about head coach Mike Tomlin.

If the Steelers lose three of their final four games, Tomlin will finish with a losing record for the first time in his 17 years in Pittsburgh.

And after two rough losses to the spiraling Arizona Cardinals and New England Patriots, that situation is becoming more and more possible.

Tomlin’s contract extension doesn’t expire until after the 2024 season, and the sources inside the Steelers organization reportedly don’t believe he would get fired before then, according to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini.

Russini cited the Steelers’ typically-patient owners as reasons why Tomlin will likely see out his current contract.

Pittsburgh has had just three head coaches since 1969, including Tomlin – Chuck Noll and Bill Cowher.

So Russini doesn’t expect Art Rooney II to deviate from what his family has done in the past with head coaches.

So Russini doesn’t expect Art Rooney II to deviate from what his family has done in the past with head coaches.

But if there was a season where Tomlin could get canned, it would be this one – especially if Pittsburgh misses the postseason for a second consecutive season since Ben Roethlisberger retired.

The Steelers offense is at its worst since 2019 – when Roethlisberger missed all but two games and Pittsburgh only won eight games – and haven’t produced a top-10 offense since 2018.

The defense is still solid, but not nearly as dominant as it has been in years past.

The final four games will assuredly decide Tomlin’s fate, but it sounds as though the expectation is for him to remain in Pittsburgh – at least for another year.
