Green Bay Packers sign new quarterback ahead of first season without Aaron Rodgers

With Aaron Rodgers no longer in the building for the first time in 18 years, the Green Bay Packers have added another quarterback to the roster ahead of the 2023 NFL season

The Green Bay Packers have signed a new quarterback as the franchise prepares for life after Aaron Rodgers.

On Tuesday, Alex McGough worked out for the Packers and he will be signed to their 90-man roster ahead of training camp. Rookies report to Green Bay camp on July 21 and the full roster is set to arrive a few days later, on July 25.

McGough was originally selected by the Seattle Seahawks in the seventh round of the 2018 NFL Draft but bounced around a number of practice squads until landing with the Birmingham Stallions of the United States Football League. In 2023, McGough led the Stallions to the championship while winning MVP honours.

McGough inspired Birmingham to a second straight USFL title while throwing for 2,104 yards and 20 touchdowns in the spring. The 27-year-old was a dual-threat quarterback, as he finished with 403 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns.

After leaving the Seahawks, he also played for the Jacksonville Jaguars and Houston Texans without appearing in a regular-season contest. Stallions head coach Skip Holtz believes McGough can be a franchise quarterback in the NFL, telling NFL.com: “I think he’s as good as I’ve ever been around, and I’ve been around a lot of NFL quarterbacks.”

With the reigning USFL MVP signing for the Packers, the franchise will have four quarterbacks on the books heading into training camp: Jordan Love, rookie Sean Clifford, Danny Etling and McGough. Love is projected to be the starter, but the position could be up for grabs with Rodgers gone.

Back in April, amid plenty of speculation, the Jets finally completed a sensational trade with the Packers to secure the services of Rodgers. Along with the 15th overall pick and fifth-round selection from the 2023 NFL Draft, the four-time MVP arrived in New York in exchange for the 2023 13th overall pick, a 2023 second-round pick (no. 42), a sixth-round pick (no.207) and a conditional second-round pick.

The upcoming 2023 season will be the first time the 10-time Pro Bowler will be playing in another uniform in the NFL. The Packers are adjusting to life without Rodgers, with Love taking over as the starting quarterback for the first time since he was selected in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

The Packers traded up in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft to take Love, suggesting he would be the heir to Rodgers’ throne. Across six games in 2021, Love had a 58.1 completion percentage with two touchdowns and three interceptions, while he averaged 11.4 yards per completion. He improved in 2022, with a completion rate of 66.7 percent and no interceptions.

Packers running back AJ Dillon recently spoke of how Love has forged genuine bonds with his teammates in Green Bay during his three years with the franchise. In an interview on SiriusXM Radio, Dillon said: “People trust him; people listen to him when he enters the huddle, because it’s not like some new guy that just popped up, just calling the shots.

“He definitely has all the intangibles. He’s earned the trust of the locker room. Guys respect him. Guys want to play for him. Guys want to help him as much as they want to help themselves.

“Obviously, nothing’s perfect in football; everybody knows that. But I think he’s got a lot of support and everybody would run through a wall for him.”
