“Everyone who played with and for Jason Garrett will always remember him as a man who aspired to greatness every day he entered the building and as someone who taught all of the other players the value of hard work, enthusiasm, and respect for their craft.
“He is, and always will remain, a cherished member of the Dallas Cowboys family, and his contributions to the organization are greatly appreciated.”
Although it isn’t shocking that Garrett was fired, the length of time it took to happen following the end of the regular season was an unexpected development that prolonged Dallas’ soap opera.
While there have been whispers about Garrett’s termination ever since the season concluded, the situation didn’t become official until a week following the Cowboys’ season finale and halfway through the rival Eagles’ NFC Wild Card Game against the Seahawks.
As Garrett’s contract expired on January 14, Dallas had already begun interviewing potential replacements. Former Bengals coach Marvin Lewis and former Packers coach Mike McCarthy were among those conducting the interviews.
After a lengthy marriage that started when Garrett was a backup quarterback for seven of his eight NFL seasons from 1993 to 1999, the two parties are divorcing. Garrett then went on to become a coach, working under Wade Phillips as the offensive coordinator for Dallas in 2007. That was his role until 2010, when, following a 1–7 start, he took Phillips’ place as interim coach. Since then, Garrett has led the Cowboys to an 85-67 record, which included a win over the rival Redskins in the 2019 season finale that put a positive spin on the turbulent campaign.
Garrett was let go, though, because it was far too little at the end of a season that saw the Cowboys, full of talent but lacking consistency, dominate the headlines week after week.
