Will Ben Johnson be hired by Commanders
The rumor that Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson would be the team’s next coach began to circulate as soon as the Commanders named Adam Peters as their new general manager.
Following the conclusion of Detroit’s season, Johnson is available for employment.
Throughout the 2023 season, Johnson was seen as an inevitable head coach. That benefits him, but it hurts the Lions since they will need to find a replacement.
Like all up-and-coming coordinators, it’s unclear if he’ll be successful at the next level. It’s an entirely different kind of work.
Whether the Commanders will make him an offer is still up in the air. There are many applicants for the position. Excellent ones.
Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik, Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald, and Ravens associate head coach/defensive line coach Anthony Weaver are among them.
Furthermore, experience has far greater worth than potential, as we demonstrated yesterday. Quinn gains an edge from that.
It also raises questions about other experienced head coaches who aren’t presently on the Commanders’ radar.
