“I brought his name up”: Nebraska HC Matt Rhule recalls Brock Purdy situation from 2022 ahead of Super Bowl LVIII

Matt Rhule vehemently vetoed Brock Purdy’s selection in the 2022 draft, sending the eventual Super Bowl quarterback elsewhere.

The head coach of the Nebraska Cornhuskers remembered on Wednesday that he had pushed for Purdy to be added on the Carolina Panthers draft board. Sadly, though, the veto was placed on his recommendation.

The Panthers missed out on Purdy six times in total, including three chances in the last two rounds. They chose Matt Corral instead, and then they added Baker Mayfield. Purdy was selected by the San Francisco 49ers with the 262nd overall choice, which may not seem like much.

When we fast-forward to the present, Carolina finds the story painful. After being written off, Purdy has become a superstar. With 31 touchdowns, 4,280 passing yards, and the highest passer rating in the league, his season is impressive. The 49ers will play in Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada, thanks to his leadership.

For the 2024–2025 season, Rhule revealed a major coaching staff alteration. The Nebraska Hawks have appointed Glenn Thomas, a former Pittsburgh Steelers assistant, as their new quarterbacks coach, according to Mitch Sherman of The Athletic.
