Trae Young Trade Rumors: Spurs Interested in Hawks All-Star?

This summer, the San Antonio Spurs may be interested in acquiring guard Trae Young, an All-Star with the Atlanta Hawks.

During the trade deadline this year, the San Antonio Spurs remained silent and only made one minor transaction, sending Doug McDermott to the Indiana Pacers.

That might not be the case, though, this summer. The Spurs have the opportunity to be significantly more active in the transfer market and in free agency.

According to Yahoo! Sports expert Jake Fischer, if Atlanta Hawks All-Star guard Trae Young becomes available, the Spurs might be his destination.

“One spot other than Los Angeles that’s repeatedly been mentioned by NBA figures as a potential home for Young — if Atlanta were to ever consider parting with its franchise face and All-Star lead ball-handler — is San Antonio,” writes Fischer. “The Spurs do lack a clear-cut pick-and-roll partner for rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama.”

The Hawks are unable to compete seriously with their current squad, which has left them in a precarious position in the center of the Eastern Conference. The Hawks failed to build on their 2021 success despite becoming finalists in the Eastern Conference. The organization had thought that acquiring Dejounte Murray from the Spurs in 2022 would fix the issues, but not much has changed since then.

Although the Spurs’ action wouldn’t ensure a postseason berth, it might increase San Antonio’s competitiveness once they get Victor Wembanyama going. Wemby’s success depends on having a point guard to work with in the pick-and-roll, and Young could be the ideal choice since he can create space in the paint and improve the Spurs’ terrible 3-point shooting %.
