Duke has advanced to the final game six times and won five national titles, all under the tutelage of the late coach Mike Krzyzewski. The Blue Devils, one of the top programs in college athletics, consistently turn out some of the best players in the league. The first player in Duke’s program to have his jersey retired and the school’s first unanimous All-American in basketball (No. 10). The two-time All-American averaged 25.2 points per game in 1950–51. The next season, as a junior, he scored 26 points per game. In 1952, he received the National Player of the Year Award. Groat was an eight-time Major League Baseball All-Star, two-time World Series champion with the Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals, and the 1960 NL MVP, while playing just one season in the NBA.

Heyman’s career scoring average of 25.1 is remains the highest in the illustrious history of Duke basketball. Next on the list at 23.0 per game is the previously mentioned Dıck Groat. In school history, his career rebounding average of 10.9 ranks fourth. Of Heyman’s three seasons, the most noteworthy was in 1962–63, when he averaged 24.9 points and 10.8 rebounds, leading the Blue Devils to their first-ever Final Four berth and winning The Associated Press national player of the year award.

During his three seasons with the Blue Devils, Mullins averaged 21.9 points (fourth in school history) and 9.0 rebounds (eleventh), being a member of the first two Duke teams to make it to the Final Four (1963, 1964). In 1964, Mullins won the ACC Player and Athlete of the Year awards in addition to being selected to the first team of the league three times. Mullins’ No. 44 Duke jersey was retired in 1994. He had won 182 collegiate coaching victories over 11 seasons at Charlotte and an Olympic gold medal with the US men’s basketball team in 1964.
