Philadelphia’s Kai Wagner reinstated for first Union game of the season
NEW YORK (AP) — For the team’s season-opening match, Kai Wagner, a defender for the Philadelphia Union, has had his ban for breaking Major League Soccer’s on-field discrimination policy removed.
Wagner was suspended for three games during the playoffs the previous season due to claims that he made discriminatory remarks directed at a member of the New England Revolution. This season’s suspension was meant to last one additional game.
However, the Major League Soccer (MLS) declared on Monday that Wagner had finished the new restorative practices program. The Union takes on the Chicago Fire at home on Saturday to begin the regular season.
During Game 1 of the three-game first round playoff series between the two teams, Wagner is accused of using an anti-Asian slur on Bobby Wood of New England, according to a report published by The Athletic last year.
Earlier this month, the MLS and its players’ union jointly unveiled a new anti-discrimination policy. The policy, which was created in collaboration with Black Players for Change, adopts a restorative methodology.
