Rams Hire Tom Brady’s Former Coach to Sean McVay Staff

Jerry Schuplinski, a former tight end coach with the Las Vegas Raiders, will likely be a late addition to head coach Sean McVay’s staff by the Los Angeles Rams.

The Los Angeles Rams have not yet completed assembling their coaching staff.

Jerry Schuplinski, a former tight end coach for the Las Vegas Raiders, is anticipated to join Los Angeles as a senior offensive assistant, according to Ian Rapoport.

Shortly after announcing the addition of multiple other coaches hired earlier in the offseason, Rams head coach Sean McVay made the hire. Naturally, Los Angeles had to make several staff replacements after defensive coordinator Raheem Morris resigned, leaving the team shorthanded and allowing other teams to try to sign young players who were being trained by McVay.

The effect rookie Michael Mayer had on the Raiders offense was partially due to Schuplinski. Mayer had two touchdown catches while playing through ailments, finishing with 27 catches for 304 yards.

Although Schuplinski worked with tight ends last season, the majority of his coaching career has been helping quarterbacks, notably the all-time great Tom Brady.

In the new millennium, Schuplinski started his coaching career at John Carroll. From 2002 to 2006, he held the position of head coach at the high school level. Upon leaving his position as special teams coach at Case Western Reserve after six seasons, he joined former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick in the professional ranks.

Schuplinski won three Super Bowls with New England.

He worked as the assistant quarterbacks coach for three seasons after serving as an offensive assistant for three. Before spending two seasons as the New York Giants’ quarterbacks coach and aiding in the development of rookie quarterback Daniel Jones, he had the same role in 2019 with the Miami Dolphins.

Before taking over in the tight end room, he spent a year as the Raiders’ senior offensive assistant coach.

Schuplinski brings a well-rounded coaching resumé to Los Angeles, which may be needed given the transition the Rams find themselves in. Should the heir to quarterback Matthew Stafford be found in this year’s NFL Draft, it’s likely Schuplinski will play a role in his development.

It would be overly ambitious to read much more into the hire, but adding another well-respected mind to the staff is only good news.
