Rutgers football extended an offer to Matthew Hawn last week, marking the offensive lineman from New York’s fifth Power Five offer.
Hawn is a 6-foot-6, 270-pound interior offensive lineman from Christian Brothers Academy in Syracuse, New York. Last week, Rutgers accepted offers from Boston College, Syracuse, Duke, Pittsburgh, and Pittsburgh as part of his recruiting.
Hawn is physically strong and has exceptional movement for his size. He travels fluidly laterally and efficiently completes his blocks. As a blocker, he is able to pull and move downfield.
He discussed the offer from the Big Ten team and his developing relationship with offensive line coach Pat Flaherty and head coach Greg Schiano with Rutgers Wire last week.
“So I was in contact with coach Vallone (Scott Vallone), he was the assistant offensive line coach and is now their tight ends coach – I was in contact with him for a while,” Hawn told Rutgers Wire.
“And a month ago, he came down to one of our lifts, to watch our workouts, different o-line drills. He really liked it. Then coach Pat Flaherty watched my film and head coach Greg Schiano called with an offer.
For Hawn, her relationship with Flaherty is still developing.
Flaherty, an experienced NFL coach, coached offensive lines for more than 20 years in the league. His two Super Bowl victories with the New York Giants are what made him most famous.
Shaun O’Hara, a former offensive tackle for Rutgers, rose to the All-Pro level under Flaherty.
“I spent roughly thirty minutes talking to him the other day (last week). Simply for him to discuss his career, returning to Rutgers, coaching at other schools, and coaching at Rutgers. spoke about his family, himself, and his teaching style,” Hawn remarked.
“I thought he was really impressive, particularly the part where he coached some great offensive lines and won the Super Bowl with the Giants.” Had a fantastic career at Rutgers, returned to school, and decided to stay instead of going to the NFL. The fact that he picked Rutgers over so many other schools struck me as amazing.
Hawn stated that he intends to visit Pittsburgh, West Virginia, Army, Rutgers, Syracuse, and West Virginia in the spring.
His intended major is engineering.
