Nebraska football could be getting another B1G rival soon
Is it possible that the Nebraska football team will face a new league opponent sooner than anticipated? A few weeks ago, few people would have guessed how likely it was. It appears that conference realignment may occur once more this summer, at the very least. Furthermore, I’m not referring to UMASS’s MAC membership.
If you’ve been paying any attention to the Florida State vs. ACC rivalry, you may be wondering how it will all turn out. Despite having an undefeated season, the Seminoles are upset with the conference because they believe the ACC could have done more to ensure their spot in the CFP.
The ACC has essentially declared that since the Grant of Rights extends far beyond this fall, any conflict is meaningless. That issue, though, might be dropped in the interest of making peace with FSU.
According to Andy Staples of On3, the ACC may have indicated in a recent court filing that it is open to cooperating with Florida State. The conference would act in that manner for a reason—any recent court decision pertaining to NCAA entities typically invalidates regulations of some kind. There’s a chance a judge will rule something like the Atlantic Coast Conference cannot compel FSU to do anything against its will.
Staples believes that if the two parties come to an agreement, part of it might be to let Florida State go, so that their hold on the Grant of Rights isn’t wiped out.
It appears very likely that Florida State will be leaning at the Big Ten if that is the course of events. They may also attend the SEC, but there has previously been a connection between the Seminoles and the B1G.
The catch may be the amount of money that the ACC would like to see FSU withdraw from the Grant of Rights arrangement. There may be a new adversary for the Nebraska football team if the Seminoles believe they can afford it.
