“When this contract extension was offered to my family and myself, we were overjoyed, and we truly thank everyone on campus and in the larger ISU community who helped make it happen. We are appreciative of our administration’s inspiring leadership, our amazing staff, our amazing fans’ passion and support, and, most importantly, the dedication and hard work of the athletes we have the honor of coaching. Being in charge of this legendary program is a privilege, and we’ll keep pushing for expansion in order to bring titles to Indiana State and the Terre Haute community,” Schertz remarked.

After leading Indiana State to a 23-13 overall record and a 13-7 record in Missouri Valley Conference play, Schertz will begin his third season as head coach in 2023–2024. This represents an improvement of 12 wins overall and 9 wins in the Valley from the first to the second season. He was a finalist for the Skip Prosser Award and the runner-up for MVC Coach of the Year. After the Sycamores defeated USC Upstate in the CBI First Round, Schertz guided them to their first postseason victory since 2001 and their first postseason appearance since 2014.

ISU’s 23 wins were the most by the Sycamores since 2013-14 and tied for the most since 1978-79, while the 13 conference wins were the most by a Sycamore team dating back to the 1999-2000 season (third-most in program history). In the postseason, the Sycamores advanced to their first ArchMadness semifinal round since 2021 and fifth since 2011. Schertz’s 2022-23 team set a program record for 3-pointers in a single season (340) and led the Valley in scoring and field goal percentage.
