Texas Tech football welcomes new fleet of tight ends as spring starts

The tight ends were one of the Texas Tech football position groups that underwent off-season restructuring.

At the conclusion of the previous season, Baylor Cupp and Henry Teeter were released, and Jayden York moved to Houston. Three transfers, Jalin Conyers from Arizona State, Jason Llewellyn from Oklahoma, and Johncarlos Miller from Elon, along with early enrollee Trey Jackson from Dallas South Oak Cliff, are among the newcomers.

They will join the principal holdout, Mason Tharp.

The tight end room at Tech, according to coach Joey McGuire, “is going to be really special.”

Tech spring football started Tuesday without Conyers, who suffered a broken foot during winter workouts. It started with a bang, however, for Miller, a 6-foot-5, 245-pound junior from Greensboro (N.C.) Dudley.

“He showed up big-time,” McGuire said. “Right at the end of our last team red zone, he made a big catch in the end zone. Put one foot down, falling out of bounds, just a big-time catch.”

Gruver resident Conyers, a 6-4, 265-pound senior, was using a scooter on Tuesday while wearing an orthopedic boot over his left foot. It doesn’t concern the Red Raiders. He has a history and is anticipated back in June. Conyers has four years of collegiate football experience. During the last two seasons at Arizona State, he caught thirty receptions for 362 yards in 2023 and 38 passes for 422 yards and five touchdowns in 2022.
