LA Angels News: Non-Roster Invitee Makes Opening Day Team

Los Angeles Angels manager Ron Washington informed reporters on Tuesday afternoon that non-roster invite Miguel Sanó has made the Opening Day roster, per Greg Beacham of The Associated Press.

Sanó, who turns 31 in May, was in camp on a minor league deal. A corresponding move will have to be made to add him to the team’s 40-man roster.

“He completed all the tasks we asked him to do,” Washington declared. “He works his butt off and is very deserving of being on our roster.”

One of the league’s most formidable power hitters, Sanó started his major league career with the Minnesota Twins. Between 2015 and 2021, he hit 161 home runs, ranking in the top 25 of all major leaguers throughout that time. However, his career took a negative turn when he sustained numerous injuries.

Due to knee problems, he was limited to playing in 20 games in 2022. After he slashed.083/.211/.133, the Twins decided to send him into free agency by choosing to buy him out for $3 million rather than exercise his $14 million club option for 2023.

Prior to the 2023 season, he did not sign with any team and instead prioritized his health. He revealed to media earlier in the summer that he dropped 58 pounds before going to camp in Tempe, Arizona.
