The Los Angeles Dodgers and Will Smith agree to a 10-year contract extension that will see the power-hitting catcher stay in LA through the 2033 season.

Will Smith received an invitation to his first Major League All-Star Game last year. The Los Angeles Dodgers now want to make sure that one of the top catchers in the major leagues does not, not even by chance, get away. His presence in La-la-land has been guaranteed until 2033 by them. This will probably represent the most of the 28-year-old’s career, if not all of it. It appears that Will Smith will be a Dodger for eternity.

The Dodgers and Smith have reached an agreement to extend his contract for ten additional seasons at a discounted cost of $140 million, according to Juan Toribio and Mark Feinsand of MLB.com. Los Angeles and the catcher are able to avoid wage arbitration through this agreement. Hours later, the team verified the information.

Teammates Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto earn $70 million and $27 million year, respectively, far more than Smith’s meager $14 million. Still, Smith is a long way from being the best paid catcher in MLB, even when broken down by position. The three backstops with the biggest salaries in 2024 are Wilson Contreras ($18 million), Salvador Pérez ($20 million), and J.T. Realmuto ($23.8).

With a career batting average of.263 and a position behind Mookie Betts, Shohei Ohtani, and Freddie Freeman at cleanup, Smith is a major asset to the Los Angeles club.

Smith is in his sixth season in the Majors, during which he has played in 486 games, including the two-game series against the San Diego Padres in Seoul. Smith has 308 RBIs, 441 hits and 91 home runs, drawing 216 walks and 50 hit by pitches.
