Demetri Mitchell injury a ‘massive blow’, says Exeter City boss Gary Caldwell
Demetri Mitchell’s knee injury is a “massive blow” for Exeter City, according to manager Gary Caldwell. The team plays in League One.
In Tuesday’s Carabao Cup match against Middlesbrough, Mitchell tore his anterior cruciate ligament. Surgery is scheduled for next week.
“He’s going to be out for the season with a really bad injury, which is massive blow,” said Caldwell.
“I really feel for him, he’s had a fantastic time since he came here, and a great start to this season.”
Mitchell’s injury occurred during the first half of the Grecians’ 3-2 Carabao Cup fourth-round loss to the Championship team, depriving them of one of their strongest offensive options.
It’s a pretty bad injury, and he simply bounced his knee as he fell,” Caldwell continued.
It was quite benign, and this year’s events have followed that pattern.
“Fingers crossed he can get back quick for his career and hopefully he’ll get the surgery next week, hopefully that goes well and he can work on his rehab from there.”
In Mitchell’s absence, Exeter lost 2-0 at home to Wigan in the FA Cup first round, their 10th loss in the previous 12 games.
As his squad gets ready to visit Fleetwood Town, another struggling team, next week, Caldwell feels it’s critical that they overcome their current slump. His team was leading League One in September.
“Yet, despite the horrible
It’s clear what is bad, we have to improve in the final third, we have to improve defensively.
“We can’t keep conceding goals, we have to get clean sheets like we did at the start of the season to give us something to build on.
“It’s very clear between me and the staff what we need to work on and we need to support the players through that period and get back to winning ways quickly.”
