What is in store for Jared Goff and the other projected free agents for the Lions in 2025?
With a developing core of young stars on rookie contracts and few pressing needs, the Detroit Lions boast one of the healthiest rosters in the NFL. However, with each passing year, the roster faces new challenges. There are veterans that require attention. To maintain that core, rookie contract extensions must be granted to players. Furthermore, several important players are about to enter the last year of their contracts with the team.
There is currently nothing to be concerned about. But worth talking about for the time being.
In light of the approaching NFL Draft and the team’s potential need to address future needs, let’s examine the players who will be available as free agents in the upcoming offseason and their potential roles going forward.
Jared Goff, the quarterback
During the owners’ meetings last month, coach Dan Campbell made it clear that the Lions were interested in signing Goff to a longer contract. This was a different discussion two years ago. With little talent surrounding him, Goff was coming off a subpar first season with the Lions, raising concerns about whether he would be a long-term fit in Detroit. It’s more difficult to imagine them without him these days.
Over the past two seasons, Goff has thrown for 9,013 yards—the second-most in the NFL—and 59 touchdowns—the third-most. Along the way, he helped the Lions win two playoff games, a division title for the first time in thirty years, and a Pro Bowl selection. He’s qualified to be the guy, and
That should be reflected in his new contract.
Amon-Ra St. Brown, a wide receiver
Since his arrival, St. Brown has accomplished more for less than any other player on this Lions roster. Only four NFL players have accumulated more receptions than St. Brown (315) since 2021. His 3,588 receiving yards are more than those of just seven players. Despite being signed in the fourth round, he has emerged as one of the NFL’s top receivers. That is anticipated to change very soon.
An extension is imminent for St. Brown, who is about to enter the last year of his rookie contract. According to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, it might occur as soon as this offseason, which makes sense given that St. Brown does not have a fifth-year option. Given his importance in this locker room, he should expect the Lions to treat him well, perhaps offering a contract in the $26 million to $28 million per year range.
DT Alim McNeill
McNeill will soon be extremely wealthy given his current trajectory and the defensive tackle market’s current situation. According to Spotrac, the top 10 all earn more than $20 million annually. Each of the top 15 earns more than $16 million. At just 23 years old, McNeill would be a 24-year-old defensive tackle who is just starting to find his footing in free agency. Saying that he could command a contract in that range is hardly a stretch.
