It’s still hard to believe that less than a decade after climbing out of the Conference, we are now preparing for our first ever Premier League season.
It promises to be a season like no other, a taut, tense affair where our main aim just has to be survival.
Although there are cries to give those who earned the Hatters the opportunity to compete in the top-tier a chance to carry the job on, common sense tells me that there will be an influx of new talent, players that will be tasked with taking Luton Town that one step further as we contine to develop as a club.
But, bringing in these players, will mean that Luton Town will have to dig into their finances.
Now promotion will, as we’ve been told many a time, bring a significant windFall, the quantity of which we’ve never experienced before, but it is essential we spend it wisely.
We stand on the threshold of a golden era in the history of our club, the funds needed to build Power Court have been boosted and although we all love Kenilworth Road, our future has to be at Power Court with its increased capacity and, inevitably, higher revenue streams.
But, returning to the subject of new players, a while ago, it prompted me to ask what I believe was a very pertinent question, via our poll facility:
How Much Will Luton Pay For A Player This Transfer Window?
With three options being provided:
• £5 million
• £8 million
• More than £9 million
Now I believe that the signing of Carlton Morris, last summer, superceded our previous highest incoming transfer, the fee paid for Simon Sluga,
However, it is always difficult to gauge just how much, unless you have inside information, Luton Town pay for a player as the fees spent tend to, in the public domain, be announced as undisclosed.
But, returning to our poll and the result, it would appear that the maximum amount on a single player the Hatters will spend is £5 million with 64% of those that voted going for that option.
As for the remainder of the votes cast, 22% went for £8 million while the other 14% reckon we’ll smash through the £9 million barrier.
My view is that it depends how many players the Hatters hierarchy believe they need to bring in and that the record transfer fee could, very well, smash through the £8 million barrier if the right player becomes available.
