Celtic target left out of squad with Hoops move close and he will replace £150m man

After being left out of training on Monday, the Celtic target was out of the matchday squad 24 hours later.

In what is perhaps the biggest hint yet that a graduate from the fabled La Masia academy will be on his way to the green side of Glasgow, there was no place for Alex Valle on Barcelona’s squad list for Tuesday night’s trip to Rayo Vallecano.

Valle, the Spain Under 20 international, was on the bench for those successive 2-1 triumphs over Valencia and Athletic Bilbao to start the new La Liga season.

But not tonight.

A whole host of La Masia graduates are part of Hansi Flick’s travelling party – teen sensations Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi among them – but a certain talented young left-back is conspicouous by his absence.

And that, presumably, is because the Catalan-born Valle is set to become a Celtic player. Albeit only on a short-term,

temporary basis.

Celtic close in on Barcelona starlet Alex Valle

Mundo Deportivo reported earlier this week that Valle is due to undergo a medical with the Scottish Premiership champions before the transfer window closes later in the week.

Valle will join Celtic on what many on the continent call a ‘dry loan’.

Meaning, there will be no option or obligation-to-buy clause in his contract, the highly-rated 20-year-old due to return to the Camp Nou in July 2025

Valle will provide some much-needed competition for an often overworked Greg Taylor on the left-hand side of Brendan Rodgers’ backline.

The eternally-underrated Taylor has been lacking any sort of support since £4 million man Alexandro Bernabei moved to Brazilian outfit Internacional in the spring, and Valle’s arrival will finally give Rodgers the option of shuffling his back while giving the former Kilmarnock stalwart the odd rest.

With £25 million burning a hole in the back pocket following Matt O’Riley’s move to Brighton and Hove Albion, Valle is unlikely to be the only new face arriving at Parkhead in the final few days of August.

HITC understands that Celtic have held talks with Los Angeles FC over the £8 million-rated Mateusz Bogusz. The talented Pole boasts an impressive goalscoring record from midfield – 17 this season – and likes to drift in onto his left foot in a manner reminiscent of Hoops Player of the Year O’Riley.

HITC have been told that a loan deal for former fans’ favourite Jota is also on the cards. The twinkle-toed playmaker has struggled to make his mark in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ittihad.

Celtic are being linked with Augsburg starlet Arne Engels and Hammarby’s Bazoumana Toure too, though the latter is keen to stay in Sweden until the turn of the year.

Brendan Rodgers wants signings after Matt O’Riley exit

“I just hope we can at least get some of (the O’Riley fee),” Rodgers told Football Scotland after Celtic’s 3-0 trouncing of St Mirren on Sunday, while expressing his frustrations at the lack of movement in the incomings department.

Adam Idah and Paulo Bernardo are the only outfield signings this summer, and both played for Celtic last season on loan anyway.

“There are a number of things I won’t go into here,” Rodgers adds, keen to lay out his concerns while not getting too carried away. “But (recruitment) is definitely something – having come back in and gone through three windows now – we have to put right as a football club.

“We shouldn’t have been getting into this last week in the position we’re in. That’s the reality.

“However, that’s something for us after this window. As I said, we’ll get the players in that we want. We don’t need to manufacture our own stress when there’s no need. We don’t need to do that. So we’ll be calm this week.

“We’ll look to get the players in that can strengthen us.”

Given O’Riley’s departure, a more advanced, attack-minded midfielder has emerged as Celtic’s top priority. Hence the interest in Engels, and the 17-goal Bogusz.

Tessmann, in contrast, is more of a deep-lying playmaker in the Callum McGregor mould.

Lyon boss Pierre Sage draws comparisons with Nemanja Matic, the former Les Gones veteran who established himself as one of the finest number sixes of his generation with Chelsea and Manchester United.

“First impressions are quite positive,” Sage tells the official Lyon website of America international Tessmann while rattling off a list of attributes which would have appealed to Brendan Rodgers too.

“He has the courage to play. He often asks for the ball, even under pressure. He will provide us with solutions over time and in the sequence of our matches.

“He is similar to Matic. He brings a lot of links between the lines. We feel that he has a real ability to play with others. He is also capable of scoring, especially with shots from distance, which will offer us other solutions.”

Brendan Rodgers preparing for Old Firm derby

Celtic face Rangers on Sunday in this season’s first Old Firm derby.

It remains to be seen if former Levante loanee Valle will be part of Rodgers’ squad, The Hoops boss excited about the technical qualities the youngster honed in Barcelona’s fabled La Masia academy.

“His footballing style will complement our attacking play as well as giving us more options in our backline,” Rodgers tells the Celtic website.

‘Álex has been brought up in a real high-quality footballing environment learning all the good habits and skills associated with any top team. He is a player with some tremendous attributes.

“He has performed really well for Levante last season, been around Barcelona’s first team this year already, and he is a welcome and quality addition to our squad.”

Celtic and Rangers lock horns in a mouthwatering Glasgow derby on Sunday at Parkhead to truly set fire to the new Premiership season.

Brendan Rodgers’ side are favourites to pick up the three points given that they are champions and that they dominated their rivals last season.

But before all of that can unfold, all eyes will be on the summer transfer window and what teams do before Friday’s deadline, with Celtic selling Matt O’Riley and Rangers needing some much-needed light given negative off-field talk.

Celtic fans want the £25 million brought in from O’Riley to enhance the squad further, especially the middle of the park.

Barry Ferguson has a name on his mind, not just for the Bhoys, but his own team across the road and how he is ‘absolutely shocked’ that it hasn’t happened yet.

Scottish youngsters don’t exactly have a great reputation and they aren’t being purchased for inflated prices like English players.

But Ferguson thinks Motherwell’s rising star Lennon Miller should be attracting interest from two of Scotland’s biggest clubs – Celtic and Rangers, as he told Go Radio.

The 18-year-old plays in midfield and registered two assists at the weekend as Motherwell beat Hearts 3-1 on home soil.

Ferguson added that Miller is someone who impresses every time he watches him and he feels he is Celtic and Rangers quality.

“He’s a fantastic young footballer,” said Ferguson. “I am absolutely shocked that Rangers and Celtic haven’t registered an interest.

“Every time I see him, whether it’s in the live game or on the highlights, or you read the papers. Everybody is always speaking about him. He is always a standout.

“At that age, the amount of football he has had as a young man. He has gained a lot of experience, for me, I would take him in a heartbeat.”

These next few days could be interesting and fans are hoping for that O’Riley money to be used because the squad needs extra magic added to it.

Celtic bringing back Adam Idah was a top purchase and the obvious call from the team, but does that mean Kyogo Furuhashi will leave for Manchester City?

Kyogo is the derby king and Celtic fans will want him to take to the field this weekend because it means he stays.

On the domestic stage, Celtic have no worries, but if they want to compete in the Champions League, then they need to bring in a few more faces.

The Celtic boss warned supporters earlier this month that finding a readymade replacement for Matt O’Riley would likely be beyond the Glasgow giants.

O’Riley, after all, scored 19 goals and set up 18 more last season, winning the Premiership, the Scottish Cup and Celtic’s Player of the Year award along the way.

As of Monday, the London-born Denmark international is now officially a Brighton and Hove Albion player. And while O’Riley’s departure adds £25 million to Celtic’s coffers, any new signing is likely to be a young player who may need time to adapt and develop before he is capable of putting up such impressive numbers.

Celtic want Augsburg’s Arne Engels and Mateusz Bogusz

HITC have already confirmed Celtic’s discussions with Los Angeles FC ace Matuesz Bogusz.

Valued at £8 million, per the Daily Record, the former Leeds United starlet has been one of the stand-out forwards in Major League Soccer during 2024.

HITC can now reveal that The Hoops are looking to bring in Arne Engels from Augsburg too. Rather than land one or the other, Celtic are hoping to reinvest that O’Riley windfall in both players with the two deals likely to cost a combined fee somewhere in the region of £20 million.

Rodgers’ side are expected to submit an offer worth £9 million for Engels.

Augsburg want more than that, though sources at the Bundesliga club have suggested that an agreement could be struck for £12.5 million.

If Celtic were to pay such a fee, that would make Engels their new record signing, replacing Adam Idah in the history books only weeks after the striker returned from Norwich City on a permanent basis.

Brendan Rodgers’ side confident on three new signings

While Bogusz feels more like a natural O’Riley successor – a left-footed attacking midfielder who likes to drift in from the right – Engels’ game is all about versatility.

The speedy 20-year-old played almost everywhere for Augsburg last term; as a central midfielder, a left-winger, a right-back, you name it. Celtic, then, could be getting a few players in one.

Augsburg coach Jens Thorup, however, feels that a future awaits him as an advanced midfielder off the frontman.

“I had a few good discussions with him about it,” Thorup tells Liga Insider of Engels, who scored three goals and set up five more in the Bundesliga in 2023/24. “The focus was on how we can make his game even more dangerous for the opponent.

“He has the skills to play as a (number) ten. He can score goals, as well as make deep runs. And he is fast. We have practiced that.”

HITC understands that Rodgers – who spoke openly about his frustrations with Celtic’s recruitment of late – is pushing hard to Engels in the building before the window closes.

The Parkhead outfit appear confident that Rodgers will get his wish, Engels potentially arriving alongside Bogusz and Barcelona left-back Alex Valle.

The Spain Under 20 ace is likely to arrive on loan after being left out of the Barca squad for Tuesday’s La Liga clash with Rayo Vallecano.
