Georgia suspends star RB Trevor Etienne for Clemson game
Georgia is expected to be without one of its top players in its high-profile season-opening matchup against Clemson. The No. 1 Bulldogs are expected to sit star running back Trevor Etienne against the No. 14 Tigers, sources tell Matt Zenitz and Richard Johnson for 247Sports and CBS Sports.
The suspension stems from the Florida transfer’s March arrest on DUI and reckless driving charges.
The DUI charge was later dismissed as part of a deal with prosecutors but Etienne plead no contest to reckless driving and guilty to underage possession of alcohol, failure to maintain lane and a window tint violation.
Etienne, who is the younger brother of former Clemson running back Travis Etienne, is set to be Georgia’s top back after rushing for 1,458 yards the last two seasons at Florida, including 753 last year along with posting nine total touchdowns.
The junior back ranked as the No. 3 running back transfer of the 2024 offseason, per 247Sports, slotting behind only Quinshon Judkins (Ole Miss to Ohio State) and Damien Martinez (Oregon State to Miami).
In addition to Etienne being in line to miss the game, Georgia is also set to be without fellow running back Roderick Robinson, who’s the Bulldogs’ top returning rusher after accumulating 196 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries last season. Robinson recently underwent toe surgery and was classified by head coach Kirby Smart on Monday as being “week to week.”
It will leave the Bulldogs on some young but talented backs such as sophomore Branson Robinson and freshman Nate Frazier. The 5-foot-10, 220-pound Robinson is back after missing all of last season due to a preseason knee injury. He rushed for 330 yards as a freshman in 2022 and was a standout for the Bulldogs during fall camp. So was Frazier, who’s one of several highly-ranked Georgia freshmen who have lived up to the billing thus far and positioned themselves to be factors for the Bulldogs expect this season.
Week 2 of college football’s 2024 season is here, and so are gameday recruiting visits. While some programs — like Nebraska‘s huge opportunity Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET against Colorado — will draw loads of visitors, certain recruits on specific trips are worth monitoring more than others.
Along those lines, all seven analysts from the 247Sports national football recruiting team reported on a key visitor — a player in the region that he or she covers — to watch and why.
