Swayman does not have an agreement. Players who have not finalized contracts prior to the start of training camp are not able to take part in any activities, whether on the ice or off the ice, with their teams. The Boston Bruins would have Korpisalo (.890 save percentage last season with the Ottawa Senators) and Brandon Bussi (zero games of NHL experience) to start camp.
Swayman turned down a request to provide a comment.
Don Sweeney, the general manager, and Lewis Gross, the agent of Swayman, have less than a fortnight to come to a deal. Gross served as the legal representative for Johnny and Matt Gaudreau, who passed away on August 29th.
“One NHL GM, who requested anonymity due to discussing a player not on his team, wrote in a text that they need to sign Swayman to a long-term deal in order for him to have significant leverage.”
A number of Bruins have failed to show up at the beginning of past camps due to not having signed contracts. In 2017, David Pastrnak skipped a single day before agreeing to a six-year, $40 million deal. Charlie McAvoy was absent for three days in 2019 before finalizing a three-year contract extension worth $14.7 million on September 15th. Two days after that, Brandon Carlo signed a deal for $5.7 million over the course of two years.
Swayman made saves on 348 out of 373 shots in the 2023-24 playoffs. Among goalies who had at least three postseason starts, his save percentage of .933 was the highest.
Swayman’s environment is different in 2024-25. Linus Ullmark, who has been with him for the past three seasons, has departed. After Ullmark leaves, Swayman is expected to start in at least 55 games, as long as his development continues on its current path. This season may serve as a platform for the Anchorage, Alaska resident to secure a spot in the Olympics representing Team USA.
However, the 25-year-old has never served as the primary goalie during the regular season.
