Filip Zadina, former Detroit Red Wings first round pick, signs for 2 years with Swiss club
Filip Zadina, a former first-round pick of the Detroit Red Wings, will play hockey abroad.
Hockey Club Davos has signed the sixth overall pick of the 2018 draft, the team announced on Monday. It is a two-year agreement: “Let’s get started! Greetings from FILIP ZADINA ”
The amount was not revealed, but none of the European teams provide contracts similar to those that are being offered by NHL teams. However, Zadina, who turns 25 in November, now has the opportunity to resume her hockey career, which had halted in North America, in Switzerland, a stunning nation with one of the greatest standards of living in the world.

Zadina’s contract with the Wings was terminated last summer at his own request. Although Zadina lost money as a result of the move, which ended a three-year, $5,475,000 contract that was signed in August 2022, the Wings benefited financially and gained a roster spot. The Wings’ actual salary remaining was $4.56 million, but the termination released them from the $1.825 million annual salary cap hit that would have lasted through 2024–2025. Rather, Zadina agreed to a $1.1 million, one-year contract with the San Jose Sharks.
Zadina has some security in Switzerland because NHL training camps begin later this month, and he hasn’t received a formal offer to play in the league (a tryout may not have resulted in a contract).
Six years ago, Zadina was a highly sought-after prospect, but he was never able to replicate his scoring touch at the NHL level. He scored 41 goals, 91 points, and had a minus-95 rating in 262 games. With the Wings, he appeared in 190 games and scored 68 points and 28 goals. He was one of the Wings’ first-round selections that did not work out, along with Dennis Cholowski (No. 20) in 2016 and Evgeny Svechnikov (No. 19) in 2015. At thevery least, those were near the back
