Kevon Looney to Improve Warriors’ Offense?

April 2018 – OHL Writers

Kevon Looney is a safe, dependable center. The Golden State Warriors utilized the center mainly as a screener for Stephen Curry, Sve Kerr’ste, or whoever else had the ball and a defensive presence. However, after an impressive transformation during offseason workouts, Looney spoke of a new wrinkle to his game, which he’ll utilize in the 2024-25 season. The Warriors’ backup center spoke with Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson about his recent training and improvements and the overall objective for the past summer.

On a team known for its versatility on offense and significant 3-point shooting, Looney stood out as a center lacking skill but having the body and defense to complement his teammates with less athletically imposing physiques. However, a specific quote implies that the center will drastically change his approach to the basketball court. “It’s something that I’ve been practicing for years, but now it’s time for me to shoot threes, shoot more midranges,” Looney told Robinson. “Steve wanted me to improve in that area so I mean, I’ve been shooting a lot of shots and feeling good about my game and so it’s going to be a lot of surprises next year.”

As Looney inches closer to 30, turning 29 on Feb. 6, the physical nature of his position and role could hinder his future in the NBA. Perhaps Looney envisioned a less lucrative career without adding dimension to his limited but helpful game. Related: Kevon Looney ‘Cut’ for Improvements? Looney isn’t the first player to claim he’s worked on his shot, but he can show the work in how he trimmed down and muscled up after the Warriors failed to make the 2024 NBA playoffs.

If the Warriors can add a stretch center to their offense, imagine the possibilities of Steve Kerr’s offense.
