talks about the artwork on the cover of his fifth album.

This week, the latest cover artist for Dan’s Papers, Howard Stern, a radio legend and longtime Hamptons local, talks about his fifth cover painting. He shares details on his selection process for subjects, his fascination with abandoned buildings like barns, and why some struggle to acknowledge his artistic talent.

I told a friend I enjoy painting old, abandoned buildings, and he took me to this location. I came by several times. The best times to capture various lighting were in the early morning and late afternoon. I captured numerous photos and created small sketches from various perspectives; 3-inch squares to help me decide what to paint on a larger canvas. I have completed at least 11 miniatures of this place.

I am drawn to objects that narrate our past. You could invent a countless number of narratives about the events that could have taken place in these buildings. I adore the organic decomposition. The buildings have been eroded by time and I can’t help but recognize the human history within them.

Painting a cracked wall or shattered window with enigmatic, dark hues hiding behind the glass presents a challenge. I enjoy watching how the light illuminates the landscape and influences the shadows and the morning mist in the distance. I spent a lot of time working on this painting because there were many things to consider.

Throughout the time we have featured your artwork on our cover, we have received feedback from your fans who are unable to come to terms with the idea that you could be talented in painting. How do you respond to those individuals?

I comprehend the reasons behind their lack of acceptance or disbelief. I believe there are specific stereotypes about painters: They are viewed as delicate and sensitive individuals who exist in a separate world, and when they listen to me on the radio, they don’t perceive me as someone who would be a painter. Additionally, the majority of individuals believe that one can only excel in one area…presuming you consider me skilled in radio.
How is your painting coming along? How do you notice your growth and development as an artist

I am currently on a hiatus from painting. I have not painted over the summer. I have been dedicating my attention to different aspects of my life, but I am confident that I will return to it. I have numerous ideas for paintings that I want to create.
I viewed Beth’s pictures from Italy on Instagram. Did any of the artwork there inspire you for your own projects? Were you able to paint or take photos for future artwork during your time there?
I didn’t create art in Italy, but I snapped many photos. Discuss ancient buildings — I adored the overall atmosphere.
