There is an increase in the number of cases of a disease affecting dogs being treated by veterinarians in Kansas City.

Kansas City veterinarians are seeing an increase in cases of leptospirosis, a disease that poses a threat to dogs and can be transmitted to humans.

Dr. Cynthia Goldston works as a vet at the Pet Resource Center of Kansas City. In the past month or so, she mentioned that they have observed two dogs being diagnosed with leptospirosis.

She mentioned that every dog is in danger, but there exists a vaccine.

Leptospirosis is an infectious disease caused by bacteria transmitted through infected urine.

Goldston explained that the virus is commonly spread through polluted water sources, often from infected animals such as raccoons, rodents, and other wildlife.

“Dogs typically acquire it from soil and stagnant water, such as lingering old puddles or unmoving creeks,” Goldson explained.

Goldston mentioned that it has the potential to lead to kidney or liver complications.

Symptoms consist of — elevated body temperature, abdominal discomfort, throwing up, muscle rigidity, and yellowing of the skin.

Leptospirosis can be spread to humans via contaminated urine as well.

Goldston advised to wash your hands if you have children nearby and notice yellow signs in a young pet. Clean all items that have come into contact with the animal, including bedding and any surfaces that can be bleached.

Just last week, she mentioned that they spotted a puppy with yellow gums and eyes.

By analyzing the blood samples, they discovered that the dog was suffering from liver disease and kidney failure.

The puppy was euthanized.

Goldston expressed that it was extremely sorrowful.

Goldston confirmed that approximately one month ago, an elderly dog infected with leptospirosis was also put to sleep.

Karen Love expressed that things were not going well at all.

Love cannot envision a world without her four-year-old dog.

Her intention is to contact her veterinarian regarding the Lepto vaccination.

“Generally speaking, you don’t want zoonotic diseases,” Love explained, since they are also more difficult to diagnose in humans due to not being commonly searched for.” Yeah, that is also a concerning matter.

Goldston stated that there are methods to avoid leptospirosis. She advised staying away from polluted water sources and ensuring your dog is vaccinated.
