Birmingham break League One record to buy Stansfield
Birmingham City, a League One team, made a significant signing in the summer 2024 transfer window by acquiring Fulham striker Jay Stansfield for over £10m on a seven-year contract.
While finalizing the addition of Celtic’s Tomoki Iwata as their 16th summer signing of the night, the American-owned club – who were relegated from the Championship in the previous season – also secured their 17th signing, which was the most significant one.
They are believed to have agreed to give Fulham £10m plus additional payments if Blues achieve promotion, following the rejection of their first offer by the Premier League team earlier in the day.
Fulham could also profit from any potential future transfer because they have a sell-on clause included in the agreement.
Although the official price has not been revealed, it has definitely broken the League One transfer record.
The £4m paid by Sunderland to Wigan Athletic for Will Grigg five years ago was considered to be understood.
However, there have been many reports stating that Blues had nearly surpassed this themselves earlier in the summer with their consecutive signings of defender Christoph Klarer and midfielder Willum Willumsson.
Both amounts were kept secret, but it was believed that both were close to £4 million.
The Blues have reportedly spent over £25m this summer, including paying large fees for Emil Hansson, Ayumu Yokoyama, Alex Cochrane, and Lyndon Dykes, in addition to signing nine other players.
The spending spree has been funded by owners Knighthead, Alex Cochrane
