Terriers academy graduate Matty Daly has agreed to a two-year contract with League Two Harrogate Town following his release from the John Smith’s Stadium.
The midfield playmaker made his Huddersfield Town debut under Jan Siewert towards the end of the club’s Premier League spell in 2019 before making sporadic appearances for Danny Cowley and Carlos Corberan in the years that followed. The highlight of Daly’s Terriers career came as he scored an injury-time winner away to Charlton Athletic in December 2019 – a victory that ultimately kept Town up at the Addicks’ expense.
Daly was never able to truly establish himself in the first team, however, and was sent out on a series of League Two loans, the most recent of which was a season at Harrogate in the season just finished. He has now made that move permanent.
Daly said in a statement on Harrogate Town’s website: “I am really happy to join the club on a permanent deal. Last year, I really enjoyed my football playing here. There was a real togetherness and that made it a great dressing room to be a part of.
“The gaffer (Simon Weaver) and Thirs (Paul Thirwell) allowed me to express myself. They wanted me to contribute with goals and assists which helped to get the best out of me. “Looking ahead to next season, it’s all about developing on the positives of the last campaign, both for me personally and for the club. I can’t wait to get going.”
Harrogate’s head of player recruitment Lloyd Kerry said: “We are delighted to sign Matty on a permanent deal. We knew a few weeks ago that he would be available and we moved pretty quickly. We know all about Matty and the quality which he has. He scored some vital goals for us last season and at the age of 22 we believe he can become a big asset for this club.”
