Gunfire erupted among the throngs of spectators celebrating the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory parade, which drew tens of thousands of attendees on Wednesday. The tragic incident resulted in one fatality and left at least 21 individuals injured, marking yet another shooting event at a prominent sports or concert venue in the country. According to the Kansas City, Kansas City Chiefs police, the shots were fired west of Union Station at approximately 2 p.m. local time. Interim Fire Chief Ross Grundyson reported during a press conference that 22 individuals sustained gunshot wounds, including one who died, with eight suffering from injuries deemed immediately life-threatening, seven with serious injuries, and six with minor injuries.
Numerous individuals along the parade route were transported on stretchers.
Lisa Augustine, a representative for Childrenβs Mercy Kansas City, reported that the hospital is currently attending to 12 patients from the event, which includes 11 children, some of whom have sustained gunshot injuries.
Police Chief Stacey Graves indicated that three individuals have been taken into custody; however, detectives are looking into the possibility that one of these individuals was part of a group of bystanders who aided the police and may have subdued an attacker.
Graves expressed his frustration regarding today’s events, stating, “Those who attended this celebration had a right to anticipate a secure environment,” during a news conference.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday evening, radio station KKFI reported the tragic death of DJ Lisa Lopez-Galvan, the host of “Taste of Tejano,” due to the shooting incident.
KKFI lamented, “This irrational act has robbed a wonderful individual from her family and the Kansas City community.”
Lopez-Galvan, recognized by her DJ name “Lisa G,” was a vibrant personality and a devoted mother from a respected Latino family within the community, as recounted by her childhood friends Rosa Izurieta and Martha Ramirez, with whom she worked at a staffing agency. Izurieta mentioned that Lopez-Galvan had taken part in the parade with her husband and their adult son, an ardent Kansas City sports enthusiast who tragically fell victim to gun violence. “Lisa was the type of person who would unhesitatingly place herself in danger for others,” Izurieta reflected.
