Metallica fans were treated to a unique surprise during the band’s recent performance in Mexico City, as they kicked off the show with the iconic “La Chona,” a beloved classic by Los Tucanes de Tijuana. The song, featured on the group’s 1995 album *Me Robaste El Corazón*, has become a cultural staple across generations in both Mexico and the U.S.
As the first chords of the song filled the GNP Seguros Stadium, the crowd erupted in excitement. Long-haired rock fans swayed to the northern rhythm, with Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo and guitarist Kirk Hammett leading the charge. Trujillo, donning a traditional mariachi hat at various points during the night, took on vocal duties for this unexpected tribute, delighting both the audience and fellow band members.
The moment quickly gained traction on social media, with fans celebrating Metallica’s gesture toward Mexican culture. User @virian_avaa noted, “La Chona is national heritage and Metallica knows it,” while @Amackdiel expressed disbelief, writing, “The most surreal thing, Metallica playing La Chona.” Videos capturing the electrifying moment flooded platforms, showcasing the harmonious blend of rock and regional music.
Metallica is currently on their M72 World Tour, promoting their 2023 album *72 Seasons*. This marks their fourth performance in Mexico City, with additional shows scheduled for September 27 and 29. The band’s relationship with Mexico dates back over three decades, starting with their 1991 Black Album tour, which included a memorable series of concerts at the Palacio de los Deportes in 1993. Their enduring bond with the country was further solidified with the release of their live DVD *Orgullo, Pasión y Gloria* in 2009, capturing three exhilarating nights at the Foro Sol.
In a nod to their continued appreciation for Mexican culture, Metallica’s production team documented the entire show, and plans are in place to film special segments at iconic locations such as Teotihuacán, the Historic Center, Chapultepec, Coyoacán, and San Ángel next week. This not only highlights the band’s commitment to their Mexican fans but also showcases the rich cultural backdrop that influences their music.
