The failure of the Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football Association (SLSRFA) and Sri Lanka Society of Rugby Football Referees (SLSRFR) to reach an agreement is a barrier to the Dialog Schools Rugby League 2024, which was momentarily put on hold but is expected to start by the end of this week. The clash at the Air Force ground in Ratmalana shortly after the close match between hosts Science College and S. Thomas’ College brought the school rugby season to a halt on June 30, after three weeks of action-packed matches.

Following a contentious attempt in the last minutes, a few enraged Science College supporters threw a fit and robbed assistant referee Jeewaka Fonseka and on-field official Ishanka Abeykoon.

The referees of the match, the hosts Science College, primarily their supporters, and even the venue for not permitting private security personnel, who typically provide security to match officials, players, and spectators, were all blamed in the aftermath of this incident, which ultimately saw S. Thomas walk away with a narrow 30-26 victory.

However, there was some respite after a series of meetings that were started by the sponsor Dialog Axiata, who invited members of the Independent Technical Advisory Committee as well as representatives from SLSRFR and SLSRFA.
