Latest news from BirminghamLive as former Aston Villa boss Dean Smith favourite for Sheffield Wednesday job
Former Aston Villa boss Dean Smith has emerged as a favourite for the vacant head coach job at Sheffield Wednesday.
Smith could make a swift return to management following a brief stint at Leicester City. The 52-year-old joined the Foxes in April on a short-term deal until the end of last season.
According to our sister title YorkshireLive, Smith could be set to join the Owls following the departure of Darren Moore. Talks are said to have taken place between both parties “in the past few days.”
Smith is also thought to be owner Dejphon Chansiri’s preferred option.
Wednesday could become the sixth club in his managerial career and former Owls defender Richard Wood believes he would be a “good appointment” for the club.
“It’s very strange how it has all unfolded [at Wednesday] and what has happened because they did brilliant to get promoted,” he told BBC Radio Sheffield. “I wanted to go to that game [the play-off final] but I was on holiday so I couldn’t go. They did brilliant but it is weird what has gone on.
“But Dean [Smith] is very good. He was my centre-back partner at Sheffield Wednesday many years ago. I went to his son’s christening. I got invited there. Even though there was an age gap, I did get on well with him. He has gone into management and done really well.
“He has been at some very big clubs. I know he has been sacked [at some clubs] but that happens as a manager. He was very knowledgeable as a player and he always said he wanted to go into coaching. He has done really well so far. I would like him to get the job because I know him and I feel he can do a good job. It would be good to see.”
