Latest Coventry City transfer news as former Sky Blues midfielder Carlton Palmer talks about Gustavo Hamer amid reported interest from Leeds and Fulham
Carlton Palmer has warned Coventry City they “run the risk” of losing Gustavo Hamer for nothing if they do not sell him in the current transfer window.
Palmer, who played for Coventry between 1999 and 2001, has suggested the club may “have to cash in” on Hamer this summer and face up to the double blow of losing him and Viktor Gyokeres.
Premier League side Fulham have been credited with an interest in Hamer, who is entering the final year of his current contract with the Sky Blues. According to Palmer, newly-relegated Leeds United – another of his former clubs – are interested too.
Star striker Gyokeres, meanwhile, is on the verge of a £20million move to Sporting. To lose two big players in quick succession would come as a huge blow to Mark Robins, but Hamer could otherwise leave for nothing in 12 months.
Speaking to Football League World about Hamer and Coventry, Palmer said: “Fulham are said to be monitoring the situation of Coventry star midfielder Hamer.
“Coventry would like to keep hold of the talented player, with the departure of star striker Viktor Gyokeres imminent.
“However, the issue is Hamer is entering the final year of his contract. Should Hamer not commit to a new deal, Coventry can’t run the risk of him leaving the club for nothing next season.
“So they may well have to cash-in on him with several very interested parties, Leeds United being one of those.”
