Nottingham Forest have seen a bid rejected for Braga goalkeeper Matheus during the summer transfer window. The Reds are trying to reinforce that particular area of the pitch prior to the season kicking off next month.
According to Sport Italia, the stopper was the subject of a £4 million bid from Forest. Braga, however, want to recoup more for their first-choice goalkeeper, if they’re to consider selling him this summer.
The experienced performer had been identified by the Reds. They’ve now submitted a bid but it’s been considered too low and it remains to be seen whether the Premier League club will return with another bid.
Matheus has been with Braga for nine years. He signed from Brazilian outfit America-MG and has made 293 appearances for the Portuguese outfit, keeping 98 clean sheets.
Forest have made Dean Henderson their number-one target for the gloves next season. That move has stalled somewhat, however, as Manchester United aim to sign another goalkeeper first.
It’s unlikely that Matheus was considered an alternative to Henderson. His profile seems to make him more of an option to rival Wayne Hennessey for the number two spot and perhaps Forest will make another bid.

This wouldn’t be a bad addition to the Forest ranks. However, if he was to arrive at the expense of Henderson, it would represent a bit of short-termism by the football club.
At 31, Matheus does have some time on his side but a younger keeper would surely be wanted. As a number two, however, the Brazilian could prove useful.
The player has a contract until 2027 with Braga. As a result, they won’t be in any hurry to sell him and Forest will have to up the ante to get him.
Rumour rating: 4/10 – This would perhaps be an underwhelming signing if Forest get it over the line. Matheus would be fine as a backup but as the first choice this would be a little bit bargain basement by the Reds.
Henderson is the stopper that everyone wants to get over the line. If they can’t get that deal done, perhaps the Reds should spend big money to strengthen such a key area.
