Some of Trevor Francis’ Nottingham Forest teammates have paid tribute to the club legend after news of his death.

The 69-year-old died of a heart attack on Monday at his home in Marbella, Spain, sparking a flood of tributes from former clubs and players.

Nottingham Forest are among those to pay their respects, writing on Twitter: “Nottingham Forest is deeply saddened to learn the passing of two-time European Cup winner, Trevor Francis. A true Forest legend who will never be forgotten.”

Francis, England’s first £1m player, will forever be in the Forest history books after scoring their winning goal in the 1979 European Cup final. It was the first of two European Cups that Forest won back-to-back under Brian Clough.

Among the tributes were two from teammates the night Forest beat Malmö 1-0 in Munich to become only the fourth British team to win European football’s greatest prize.

Full-back Viv Anderson wrote on Instagram: “Just heard the unbelievable news regarding Trevor Francis. He was such a wonderful person and fabulous teammate, he will be sadly missed. My condolences go to his family and friends RIP.”

Goalkeeper Peter Shilton added on Twitter: “I’m absolutely devastated to hear about my old team mate Trevor Francis. Such a wonderful gentleman. A friend and a terrible loss.”

As well as making an impact on the domestic stage, Francis also played 52 times for England. He would compete with an up and coming Gary Lineker for a place in the team, with Lineker also among those to pay tribute.
