Coventry City contract news from CoventryLive as Sky Blues boss Mark Robins is asked for an update on Gustavo Hamer’s uncertain future
Mark Robins admits the future of Coventry City favourite Gustavo Hamer lies in the player’s hands.
The Sky Blues ’ star midfielder continued to build his pre-season fitness with an eye-catching display in Tuesday night’s 5-1 friendly victory at League Two MK Dons, setting up Ellis Simms for his equalising goal.
Hamer, whose name was sang aloud by the travelling Sky Blue Army keen to show their love for him, played for just over an hour, having got through his first 45 minutes at Shrewsbury at the weekend since recovering from an ankle injury from the play-off final at Wembley at the end of May.
The 26-year-old is understood to be the subject of interest from a number of clubs in the current transfer window, with Premier League Burnley and Fulham admirers as well as newly relegated Championship side Leeds United.
City, meanwhile, would dearly love Hamer to stay and the club have offered him a new, long-term contract in the hope that he’ll sign and commit himself to the Sky Blues as he enters the final year of his current deal.
When asked after Saturday’s game if there had been any developments regarding Hamer’s situation or interest in his services, Robins insisted: “Nothing at all and I honestly don’t expect anything to happen. And I will be glad if it doesn’t.”
He went on to say that he would “keep talking to him and working towards a solution for everybody; the best for everybody and hopefully that will be him staying.”
Asked again after Tuesday night’s match at Stadium:MK whether there was any progress regarding the player’s situation and the chances of him signing a new contract, the manager said: “I have got nothing new to add on that or share with anybody. I think that will become clearer as we move forward, but that’s entirely down to Gus.”
