Coventry City transfer news from CoventryLive as Sky Blues boss assesses the state of play in his goalkeeping department

The arrival of Brad Collins at Coventry City this summer prompted the interesting question as to which goalkeeper will start the new Championship season.

Last season’s first choice, Ben Wilson, appeared to be in pole position given his outstanding 2022/23 campaign when he kept a club record 22 clean sheets, won the division’s Golden Glove award and was named in the EFL Team of the Season.

But a pre-season back problem appears to have made the decision for Sky Blues boss Mark Robins. Asked if Wilson – who sat out his third pre-season match on Saturday – has a chance of being fit for Sunday’s campaign opener at Leicester City, the manager said: “I don’t know yet, we’ll have to see. His back is playing up a little bit. He has missed three out of he four games so it’s not an ideal situation.”

Collins’ arrival from Barnsley also posed the question as to whether last season’s understudy Simon Moore would be surplus to requirements and be looking for a new club this summer. But asked if City can sustain three senior goalkeepers, Robins said: “Well it’s important that we have three goalkeepers because we have one who has been out for a while with Ben, and Simon is there as an able replacement for him at the moment.

“But Brad has had a chance to play. I wanted to give him a chance of an extra game because, potentially, he may start at the weekend. We’ll have to wait and see how things unfold this week.”

The transfer window remains open for another month, until September 1, which means if Wilson recovers soon there could still be an opportunity for Moore to find first team football elsewhere.
