Gillingham manager Neil Harris preparing to take on the League 2 title favourites Stockport County this Saturday

Gillingham manager Neil Harris believes opening-game opponents Stockport County are the title favourites in League 2.

Beaten in the Play-off Final last season, Stockport have strengthened over the summer, adding Championship-class players in the likes of Nick Powell (ex-Manchester United and Stoke) and Billy Chadwick (Hull City), along with England youth international forward Louie Barry on loan from Aston Villa and Salford captain Ibou Touray.

He said: “We’re playing against, in my opinion, the league favourites.

Gillingham goalkeepers Glenn Morris and Jake Turner are fighting to start in goal for the League 2 side

There is an early selection headache for Gillingham boss Neil Harris over who will begin the season in goal.

Jake Turner impressed as he came through 90 minutes in Gills’ last first-team friendly, which they won 1-0 at Dagenham & Redbridge on Saturday, with a well-earned clean sheet.

The 24-year-old ex-Bolton and Newcastle player will compete with Glenn Morris, 39, for Gillingham’s place between the sticks ahead of their opening-day League 2 trip to last term’s play-off Finalists Stockport County this Saturday.
