League Two side Wrexham are set to sign Wigan Athletic winger James McClean for £250,000, reports journalist Darren Witcoop.
Whilst the Latics endured a difficult campaign last season by suffering relegation to League One, the 34-year-old was one of the few players to emerge with a sense of pride, as his passion for the shirt led to him winning the fans’ Player of the Year award for a second time.
The signature of the 100-cap Irish international would be a real statement of intent from the League Two newcomers, who have been largely quiet in the market since their return to the EFL after 15 years away.
Having only added Will Boyce from Huddersfield since summer, McClean would represent a huge coup for the Hollywood-backed Welsh side on the eve of the new season.
The Derry-born winger had signed a new deal in May to remain in Shaun Maloney’s squad, and his departure will come as a surprise as Wigan aim to consolidate in the third-tier.
But it appears he will now be the latest big name to join Phil Parkinson’s ambitious League Two outfit.
It represents a further hit to the 2013 FA Cup winners this summer, after defender Jack Whatmough terminated his contract despite repeated efforts to retain his services at the DW Stadium.
Wrexham themselves had disappointing news on the transfer front in recent days too, as they were heavily linked with 32-year-old forward James Norwood, who opted to join National League side Oldham Athletic as he headed for the exit door at Oakwell.
