Wrexham are in advanced talks to sign Sligo Rovers goalkeeper Luke McNicholas, according to a report by the Independent.

Wrexham are looking to lure the stopper to the Racecourse Ground to bolster their options between the sticks.

McNicholas, 23, has caught their eye playing in the League of Ireland over recent times.

The Independent claim they are looking to complete a £100,000 swoop for the Mayo-born man.

Wrexham target goalkeeper

Wrexham have been patient with their recruitment this summer since their promotion from the National League. They have delved into the market to bring in defender Will Boyle and winger James McClean from Huddersfield Town and Wigan Athletic respectively.

The Red Dragons were beaten on the opening day of the new League Two season last weekend 5-3 at home to MK Dons and will be eager to bounce back with a win away at AFC Wimbledon on Saturday.

They could see McNicholas as someone to compete with both Ben Foster and Mark Howard. He is much younger than their other two options in goal and would be more of a long-term acquisition.

He has had spells at Manulla, Finn Harps and Cliftonville in the past and has made the number one spot his own at Sligo Rovers over recent times. The Irishman, who is under contract until November 2024 with his current club, has made 48 appearances for them in all competitions to date and has kept nine clean sheets.

However, they are facing a battle to keep hold of him now with Wrexham eager to strike a six-figure agreement to land him. Phil Parkinson’s side haven’t rushed into any deals yet in this window as they are confident with their squad but it they may well be active between now and the end of the month.
